Training sessions for the new season have begun at Eagles Football Academy, and Dragoș Gîlicea – Coach Of The Year at Eagles – has a key role in the technical staff overseen by Gabriel Dumitru. The children from the U12 group train with great pleasure and determination under the command of Dragoș, who has 13 years of experience in youth football coaching.

A big fan of the work from Inter Milan, the coach is very serious about each training session and believes this is exactly what Romanian players lack. “They don’t have the determination and are self-sufficient in a lot of ways, so that means a young player can’t adapt to the strictness of professional football”. Therefore, a coach that works thousands of miles away from home managed to pinpoint the exact issue that Romanian football has for some time. At Eagles, though, the mentality is totally different. Here, the future champions of Romania grow at a steady pace, and Dragoș Gîlicea talked to us about the secrets of his work. So we start with a brief review of last season…

Dragoș, how would you describe last season for Eagles?
It was an exceptional campaign for the U11 group. We managed to finish 4th in a very strong friendly tournament in Serbia and after that we finished the Echo League campaign unbeaten. My U11 group was the “Team Of The Year” at Eagles and I was awarded the “Coach Of The Year” title, something I am very grateful for.

How did you overcome the isolation caused by the pandemic?
It was tough, because the players couldn’t work as a unit and they felt the lack of games. We worked online, based on weekly cycles that were established for all the individual training modules. The kids were very serious in their preparation!

What do you expect from the 2020/2021 season?
I wish to continue developing our game, so that we can make a swift and easy move to the 11 v 11 system.

How quickly can you tell if a player can become a valuable professional? What makes the difference between a professional and the rest of the players?
An experienced coach can always observe the extra potential that a young player has. Afterwards, beyond the 15 year old mark, everything comes down to the way a players want to work and develop. The most important condition to be successful is the professional behaviour, but after these come talent, work, the parents support, psychology and the ability to never give up in crunch times.

You’re talking about the support from parents. How important is the family in the development and training process?
The parent is a vital part of the development of a young player. As long as a child gets a healthy education at home, us, as coaches, only need to worry about the sporting progress. Otherwise, we have to manage with “outside” factors. The parents are the most important role models for children, from an education perspective.

Are Romanian players better or more talented than other internationals?
As far as football talent goes, we have a great advantage, because we cam mix our native talent with the British strictness and discipline.

As a coach, on what do you put a bigger emphasis at a young age, is it ball movement, psychology, physical development?
As a priority at this age, the most important things in training are the thematics of the schedule and the training cycles. I establish a target, and then through specific drills I’m trying to achieve it. I never work a rigid type of schedule twice, but my target remains the same. So I’m trying to diversify, in order to stimulate the curiosity of the child.

How important is the school and academic preparation for the children at Eagles?
In everything we do in life, school always is the biggest factor. It will always be the place that launches you in a certain domain of activity, so that is why Eagles is very careful with the studies of its young players. Of course we want as many of them possible to play at a professional level, but the modern football player sustains a great performance at school.

Interviu cu antrenorul anului la Eagles, Dragoș Gîlicea, despre educație, metode și mentalitate
Antrenamentele pentru noul sezon au început în cadrul Eagles Football Academy, iar Dragoș Gîlicea – antrenorului anului la Eagles – este un om de bază în staff-ul tehnic condus de Gabriel Dumitru. Copiii de la U12 se antrenează cu mare plăcere și ambiție sub comanda lui Dragoș, care are o experiență de 13 ani de antrenorat în fotbalul juvenil.

Fan al metodelor de lucru de la Inter Milano, tehnicianul tratează cu maximă seriozitate fiecare ședință de pregătire și crede că exact asta le lipsește fotbaliștilor români pentru a face performanță. “Lipsa determinării sportive, coraborată cu o auto-mulțumire face ca tânărul fotbalist român sa se adapteze foarte greu la rigurozitățile fotbalului de performanță”. Iată cum un antrenor aflat la mii de kilometri distanță a diagnosticat printr-o simplă frază problema cea mai mare cu care se confruntă fotbalul românesc. La Eagles, însă, mentalitatea este diferită. Aici cresc campionii de mâine ai României, iar Dragoș Gîlicea ne-a vorbit despre secretele succesului muncii sale. Am început cu radiografia sezonului trecut…

Dragoș, cum ai descrie în câteva cuvinte sezonul trecut al lui Eagles?
A fost un sezon de excepție pentru grupa de U11. Am reușit o clasare pe locul 4 la un turneu amical foarte puternic din Serbia, iar apoi am încheiat fără înfrângere campionatul (n.r. Echo League). Echipa U11 a fost desemnată “Echipa anului” la Eagles Football Academy, iar eu am primit distincția “Antrenorul anului”, pentru care sunt foarte recunoscător.

Cum ați gestionat la club criza Covid și izolarea cauzată de pandemie?
A fost o perioadă dificilă, pentru că micuții nu au putut să lucreze colectiv și au resimțit din plin lipsa jocurilor. În tot acest timp am lucrat online, în baza unor cicluri săptămânale stabilite exact pentru modulele de antrenament individuale. Copiii au fost foarte serioși!

Ce așteptări ai de la sezonul 2020/2021?
Îmi doresc să dezvoltăm cu desăvârșire jocul pe care l-am implementat și totodată să putem gestiona tranziția către sistemul de 11 contra 11.

Cât de repede îți poți da seama că un jucător poate ajunge la un nivel profesionist bun? Ce face diferența între un jucător profesionist și unul care nu ajunge să confirme?
Un antrenor cu experiență la nivel de copii întotdeauna va avea capacitatea să observe un plus la un copil cu potențial. Mai departe, după vârsta de 15 ani, totul se rezumă la modul în care acesta își dorește să se pregătească, să evolueze. Cea mai importantă condiție pentru succes este conduita sportivă, împreună cu alți factori precum talentul nativ, munca, sprijinul părinților, psihologia și capacitatea de a nu renunța în momentele grele etc.

Spui despre sprijinul părinților. Cât de important este aportul familiei în procesul de dezvoltare și pregătire?
Părintele este parte integrantă din procesul de instruire a tânărului sportiv. Atât timp cât i se oferă o educație sănătoasă din punct de vedere al traseelor pe care le va urma la nivel de junior, misiunea antrenorului devine mai ușoară, pentru că ne putem concentra doar pe dezvoltarea sportivă a micuțului. În caz contrar, suntem puși în postura de a gestiona și factorul extra-sportiv. Aici intervin tot felul de fluctuații comportamentale ale părinților, ei fiind cele mai bune modele pentru copii, din punct de vedere al educației.

Sunt românii mai talentați decât jucătorii internaționali din liga în care jucați?
Ca și talent sportiv suntem într-o poziție avantajoasă față de alte Academii, deoarece putem să creem un mixt între talentul nativ românesc și rigurozitatea și disciplina britanică.

Pe ce se pune mai degrabă accent la vârstele fragede, pe fizic, pe jocul cu mingea, pe psihic?
Ca și prioritate la această categorie de vârstă, foarte important este aspectul tematic și modulațiile de antrenament ale ciclurilor de pregătire. Eu propun un target, iar apoi prin antrenamente specifice încerc să îl ating. Niciodată nu repet un tip rigid de program, însă targetul este același. Încerc să diversific activitatea pentru a stârni curiozitatea copilului.

Cât de importantă este școala și educația academică pentru copiii de la Eagles?
În tot ceea ce facem în viață, școala este pe primul plan întotdeauna. Educația va fi întotdeauna rampa de lansare în orice domeniu și tocmai de aceea Eagles Football Academy acordă o mare atenție studiilor tinerilor fotbaliști. Sigur, ne dorim ca mulți dintre ei să ajungă să joace ca profesioniști, dar fotbalistul modern are și un nivel ridicat la școală.
